Asbestos - should we have been told?

Hi, I'm hoping for a bit of advice....
We bought our house in December, and for various reasons we didn't get to see the survey so presumed everything was ok.
We have recently had a problem with the central heating and while I was going through the paperwork I found a risk assesment carried out by British Gas and they found the garage roof contains asbestos ( I know this was the material of choice when the house was built) but should we have been made aware of this?
It is going to cost approx £2500 to remove it plus the cost of replacing the roof I know if undisturbed it is quite safe but it is an intergral garage and just don't feel that comfortable with it.
Any advice?

What are the reasons why you didn't get to see the survey? It sounds incredibly odd that a buyer "wouldn't get to see the survey". Did someone block you from seeing the survey, someone who had a financial interest in the sale going ahead?0 -
I don't believe it was anything sinister, the sale was quite rushed (at my request) and we did request a copy of the survey a couple of times but it never arrived.0

Its not a problem but if it is causing you to think about it then it might be best to get rid.
Have to say not seeing the survey and reading all the documents given to you is a little unruly.
I have the same problem in a house we are buying but im going to ask for the £2.5k off the asking price.0 -
garage roof contains asbestos
What what year was the house built?0 -
Asbestos in good condition is not a problem. Unless it is falling apart or the roof needs replacing the expert advice is to leave well alone. Opinion is that it does not cause harm when intact.
When it does become time to replace the roof, you will need to get a specialist firm to remove it, I was quoted about £800-£1000.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. The documents I came across yesterday were the instructions and guarantee etc for the central heating and the risk assesment was amongst them, I never even thought to look at them before now as it is a brand new system and has at least 2 years left on the guarantee so I knew we were covered.0 -
its easy sometimes to overlook things. If its one thing ive learnt read everything!!! and then get someone else to read it all!!!0

I took mine to the council tip for free.
They had a locked skip that i put it into.
Its ok if you can get it off, with out damageing.

I've been quoted £650 plus VAT for a professional to remove and dispose and to clean the area afterward. Mine is breaking down so surveyor felt it was too dangerous to tackle myself.0
