Santander horror stories worrying us ?!

Hi
we are in the process of applying for a morgage for a new build house and the on site broker has recommended a santander morgage to us .
We have sent all the relevent documents and information and recieved an email today to say we have passed the Santander credit score which we thought was great news until we read the many negative reviews online about them !
eg here http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews56707.html
The main worry is that alot of people seem to find they get pretty far down the application process even up to a few days before completion and then Santander decline the morgage offer?!
Just wondered if anyone had any advice or experience with them ?
thanks in advance

Depends on your situation, they are a bit of a nightmare at the moment but obviously you only hear the bad stories.

Our chain fell apart a week ago, in part because Santander were so slow to issue the mortgage offer (long story, though - there were several other reasons). We were told that we would definitely have an answer last Friday (27th) at the latest. We're still waiting, although it's a bit pointless now as we're no longer in a position to buy the house...0

If the mortgage application is straight forward then shouldn't be an issue in receiving an offer. Even if it may take a few days to process.
You never hear from the people that seamlessly obtain mortgages.0 -
Good point that you never hear about the good ones

is there any way to know 100% that you have a solid offer, one that they cant withdraw at the last minute ?0

I don't know how relevant it is, but-
My current mortgage is with Santander, which I took out nearly two years ago. The application process went through smoothly, and I've had no problems with them since. Every overpayment I make gets a letter confirming it, and the staff who I speak to on the 'phone have always known what needs to be done.
Having said that-
I will be remortgaging with a different lender at the end of the two years, as Santander are not able to offer a rate on a flexible mortgage which is close to First Direct. If I'd been able to get a comparable product, I would've stayed with them.0 -

There's nothing about ours that isn't straightforward. We're about 7 weeks in now, with no offer.0 -

We have recieved an agreement in principal from them now

does anyone have any experience of getting an agreement in principal and then getting turned down ? what kind of things could affect the final outcome ?
we have been truthful in our application and we have sent all the documents they asked for ?0
