Can you get a close up of the top of the exspansion vessel, and the filling loop?

Hi: are you opening the valve at the end of this arrow with a screwdriver?

A similar set up to this . Move the cursor/hand over the thumbnail photos and you'll see the ballofix end.

The slot in line with the pipe means the valve is fully open. Open the ballofix valve first, then the lever end gently , pressure will rise quite quickly Turn both ends off. Take off the hose.

That's for our hot water system, which is on a separate boiler.

Ah, you may be onto something there! We thought that as there was only one tap, that was the only thing we should open. (Our other expansion vessel, for the hot water system, has two levers/taps and we open both to pressurise it). At work now, but will follow your advice at home tonight and see what happens. Fingers crossed! And thanks again for all your help :-)

In that case it is the wrong type of expansion vessel.

Expansion vessels suitable for use on an unvented hot water system are always colour coded white/cream.

Red ones are for heating systems only.

Thank you so much for all your help. The very detailed instructions given by Canucklehead fixed the problem - system is now running and the house is toasty (but not too toasty - we're moneysavers after all!).
Gas4you - my previous answer was not as detailed as it should be, the heated towel rails and the hot water are run off one boiler and the other radiators off the other.
