Advice - new boss out of depth?

Hi - got a new boss since Nov last year, he has done this type of job before but I think not as a boss ! We get on fairly well but he doesn't talk to me enough and loses things and books things and doesn't tell me ! I then get it in the ear from others because I don't know. Have tried to converse with him about it but to no avail. Am also getting wound up because I end up finishing his job because he starts things and then doesn't finish them. I had a long conversation with top boss ( over him) explaining that I thought he was out of his depth but this didn't work and I think he was told about it which didn't help matters much.
I DID like my job but am getting frustrated because I don't know if I can keep checking on him but not checking on him if you see what I mean; It's really not my job to check what he is doing but if I don't we're all in the doodah. Any advise other than leave?
Tks anyway - feel better now I've sounded off!

Exactly like my boss, see my thread here
It came to a head as I got a rollicking for something he had not kept me up to speed with.
I totally sympathise, my boss is terrible delegator and treats me like his p.a.
I've decided to take the tack of no longer reminding him of meetings etc, asking for email requests of work required, and trying to pin him down for updates as much as possible. Its still very hard, although he has been a manager before (actually mine in another job) he can't seem to get a handle on managing himself never mind his staff.
I'm basically keeping my head down and looking for another post, although I know he is too which may help me in the long term.
I was away last week in Europe on hols and he rang me 4 times...0 -
No easy way of dealing with it I'm afraid. As long as you get on with the boss you should be grateful. It's when they're incompetent, arrogant, aggressive, from the army and you're their victim that you need to worry - been there and done that.
If you get along with the boss just do your best to help them - thats called Teamwork. Put up with it while you can and keep your eye out for anything else going. Either that or go off sick for a while (stress is the easiest method) and then the company will see the boss struggling without your support (plus the boss will miss your support). Sounds weird doesn't it but I worked at a place years ago where you were only appreciated if you went sick. If you were loyal and went to work through thick and thin you'd get all sorts of crappy treatment.0 -
Give us an idea of what happens when you find out that he hasn't finished something - what sort of things does he not finish? If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

Hi - thanks for the replies - more or less what I was expecting really. Just frustarting.
He is really bad about calling people - makes promises to do so but then forgets, and as he makes a lot of calls when he's out I won't know until the poo hits the fan or I get a complaint form either the customer or another staff member. He has lots of ideas - mainly good but doesn't follow them through, tells different people thngs but no one gets told everything, and I need to know it all as I am the core of theplace - not being big headed but everything HAS to go through me from either the customer or the staff because I control the companies calender for other staffs activities. Sorry don't want to say too much as it will give way details of the comapny - bad ethics.
Anyways - the time off thing is prob how I'll go - had a week holidays earlier in the year and came back to chaos. Proved a point and perhaps I need to do this. Don't like to.0
