Hi all
We are planning on getting a new bathroom installed, we have had 3 quotes all have been around £10,000 except for Dolphin at £17,500 (think of a figure and double it
)
We are having a walk in shower on same level as floor
New Glass shower enclosure
tiled throughout mosaic in shower area.
Aqualisa shower installed
New tank for extra water
Underfloor heating
Laufen bathroom range
Towel radiator
Touch sensitive light switch
Bathroom is about 9ftx9ft
I know what we want isn't cheap but materials come in at about
£4000-4500 and we are being quoted at around £6000 for installation for 2-3 weeks. We are in York area .
Would this be about the right quote for installation
Thanks in advance
Jon

Wow! Thats a lot of money to spend on a bathroom!!!
Are they ripping out the old suite and starting from new? Any new wiring or replastering etc? 6K to fit sounds expensive, have you looked in your local plumbers merchants? Some cities have very large centre that have some amazing suites etc. They might also be able to recommend a fitter.
3 weeks sounds like a long time too.0 -
That's an amazingly high bill. I had two done for that price.
Most bathroom fitting companies make money on the sale of the goods and on the fitting and then subcontract the work.
Try to get prices on the equipment yourself from the many specialist stores
http://www.wdbathrooms.co.uk/
http://www.upiko.co.uk/
http://www.steamybathrooms.net/
There are many more and most have special offers on all the time.
Then find youself a good local plumber to do the fitting for you. He will be much more reliable than a subcontractor who you do not know.
Beware of so called offers from Dolphin - they never charge anyone full price!!0 -
i would say labour of approx 2k to 3k max, would be about right.
timescale of 3 weeks is just plain nonsense.Get some gorm.0 -
Hi Scoot
Its really difficult to give a price without actually seeing the job but i would say that your quotes are a touch on the high side. Given the information you told us i would say you should be paying somewhere betwenn £7k to £8k. And i would be suprised if the job took more than 2 weeks.
As a bathroom fitter i would love to follow a Dolphin salesman around. I fitted a bathroom last month where the customer had a quote from them. I supplied and fitted the suite, included all electrics and plumbing, tiled the floor and entire walls, reboarded and skimmed ceiling and put up all the accessories and blinds etc. I charged £6k. Dolphins first quote was an unbelievable £23k dropping to £11,500 if they signed there and then. Nice work if you can get it i guess!
Anyway, hope the info helps you.

Thanks for all the replies, however I have just had a rap over the knuckles by the missus as I got the installation and price of the suite mixed round
.
I have been informed that it is a Koudos Shower enclosure also.(does this make a difference)
We are looking for someone to take over the whole project management of this so thats probably why the quotations are so high, as we had cowboy builders in to work on the kitchen and after 3 yrs we are still paying for those mistakes, so the thought of having some one who takes complete control of all jobs does appeal at the moment.
Thanks again

Your price is about right for a high quality fit, I used to fit high end wet rooms before I started my existing business and I didn't do a single fit under £10K. I used to do the majority of the fitting myself (my main trade was tiling), I would sub the electrics to a registered spark and the plastering to a pro but ultimately I was responsible for the entire fit and the buck stopped with me.
Laufen is the best value pottery you can get IMO - especially if you've gone for the Pro range.
However I would expect a high standard fit with no quibble callbacks for any snagging for the first week or two, this is far more than a standard bathroom fit, but go with the company with whom you're most comfortable and have had recommendations for.0 -
Dont know about bathroom prices but know how to spot a con artist or cowboy in any trade.Generally the tell tale body language and phrases, or should I say, noises go something like this.
Raised eyebrows and slow breath out.
One hand or both on hips at same time as shaking head slowly.
One hand cupping chin and almost covering mouth usually at the same time as shaking head.
Any tutting sound.
If they ask who did the work on it before, whether its your roof, pipes or anything, you know they are going to tell you they did it wrong and it costs more to fix someone elses mistakes.
If they mention the phrase cowboy builder at all, usually when saying something like"It must,ve been a cowboy got their hands on this before luv" then you can guarantee they are one too!
If they can quote there and then without the use of a calculator or pencil and paper then either they are a mathematical genius who has fallen into the wrong line of work or they have just plucked a random figure out of mid-air depending solely on how well off they think you are.
When a suited and booted salesman does something on his calculator ask to see his working out, usually he is just going through the motions and is actually working out how much he thinks he can get away with charging you.
GENERALLY JUST GO WITH YOUR GUT INSTINCT.IF THEY WORRY YOU AT ALL YOUR INSTINCTS ARE PROBABLY RIGHT AND THEY SHOULD BE AVOIDED AT ALL COSTS.I ESPECIALLY DISLIKE AND AVOID ANY TRADESMEN WHO USES THE TERMS LUV, DOLL OR BABE WHEN ADDRESSING ME,OR WHO ASK WHEN MY HUSBAND WOULD BE AVAILABLE TO DISCUSS THE JOB WITH THEM, OR WHOS MOBILE GOES OFF WITH A SILLY LOUD RINGTONE WHILE YOU ARE TALKING WITH THEM.IF THEY ARE RUDE ENOUGH TO ACTUALLY ANSWER THE PHONE WHILE THEY ARE IN YOUR HOME DISCUSSING A QUOTE THEN GET RID OF THEM.
Ask for customer recommendations or better still ask to see some of their previous work especially if it is a big or expensive job."Reaching out to touch the stars dont forget the flowers at your feet".0
