Changed NI number?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section of the forum.

When I left school and started work my NI number on wage slips etc ended with a B and years later it now ends with a D, I tried sorting this out with HMRC and all they said they could do was give me written conformation of my NI number which they did and the number they gave me ends in a D.

As far as I am aware the NI number shouldn't change, if this is correct can anyone point me in the right direction as who to contact as everyone I have tried to bring this up with maintains there is no way it could have changed despite me having wage slips, P60's etc. with different numbers .

Your National Insuarnce number is unique to you and should never change. Did you receive a plastic card when you left school? This may well have been incorrect.

I would try not to worry as the letter at the end is irrelevant, HMRC do not use this. If you give me the last 2 numbered digits of your National insurance number I can tell you if it's meant to be a B or a D (these numbers determine the letter).

    Hi, thanks form the reply.

I had the card when I left school but it was stolen with my wallet not long after getting it. I'm pretty sure it was a B, the last two numbers are 13.

13 would be mean the letter is a B. Perhaps it has been mistaken for a D at some point over the years. I would inform the relevant people it should be a B but like I said I wouldn't worry too much as it will not affect anything with regards to your contributions etc.

a similar thing happened to me but it was one of the numbers in my NINO that had changed (from a 5 to a 6).

I noticed it when I took early retirement and had asked by phone for a pension forecast (that was before the reduction to 30 years).

The name they had linked to the NINO that my employer had been using on my payslip/P60 for over 10 years was not me!

I tracked back through my old P60s and found when it had changed, the P60 was manually written and was just a simple error.

I was concerned that my NI contributions had been going to the wrong person for over 10 years but they sent me a year-on-year breakdown and all my contributions were there and agreed with what my P60 said.

I'd write to HM Revenue & Customs to check your records.

Who have you written to so far?
Who has told you that your NINO can't change?
If you have the proof (as I did) then photocopy it and send it to them.

  • I have a lady on my payroll having this problem. Her National Insurance numbercard states B yet HMRC have been sending P6 tax code notifications as D. As a previous poster said I told her not to worry too much as HMRC do not use the letter. The matter is currently ongoing so I don't know the outcome yet.
