Can anyone recommend a good local hire car company in/around Sorrento?

Unless you really really need a car there don't as the roads are incredibly narrow & dangerous - every car you see will be dented & scraped - use taxis if possible - otherwise use one of the bigger hire firms0

I agree with johnnyreggae.
I have been to Sorrento many times, and apart from the narrow busy roads, parking can be a pain. I usually like a car for the freedom it can give, but have never hired one in Sorrento.
Can I ask what you require a car for? Just that public transport is cheap and reliable.
Pompeii and Herculaneum are a cheap train ride away, Amalfi is a cheap bus ride away etc0 -
Hi BillTrac
Thanks for your advice.
We're holidaying with another couple who tend to stick to the area where they're staying and thought that we'd broaden their horizons, though I suppose that we could equally do that using public transport (which I tend to agree is much more fun!).0 -
I agree with other posts...I was a holiday rep there and cars do get dented...maybe not always when you are in it...but at the hotel car park, side street, coaches of which there are many...very narrow and very busy in peak season. Public transport is stinking cheap....On Amalfi coast it is hair raising and I think sometimes cars are banned on a weekend...not sure.0

I agree with the other posts, the roads are crazy.
Everything in Sorrento is near enough to walk to. The Public Transport is cheap. You can also get the ferry across to Naples and capri. Tours are a fairly good price to pompeii and versuvius.0 -
A trip I did last year which I hadn't noticed before was to the cable car at Monte Fiato.
Great ride up and down and some fantastic views
You can either get a tour which includes train, one-way cable car up, light snack and mini-bus down or do as I did and get the train myself(it's about three stops) and buy a return at the cable car booth. The tour can be booked at the railcar booth outside the station.
I also did a day trip to Capri a couple of years ago on the hydrofoil. Such a great day that I have been back three times now to stay on Capri. First time in a hotel, the other times I have rented a small villa. And you can rent a small powerboat to take yourself around the island:T0 -
Like the others, you really don't need a car there. We usually hire a car on holiday but was totally unnecessary there, you can get to all the sights eg Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvious, Amalfi Coast, Caprii, Naples etc by public transport easily, cheaply and quicker - the Circumvesuviana train is much quicker than driving the roads which often have major traffic jams.
You can get a direct bus from Naples airport to Sorrento too.0
