We are looking to build a rockery with herbs and plants in one end of our raised bed. We've quite afew plants and herbs to go in there already but are lacking the actual rocks. Any siggestions where we could get some fairly cheaply.

I've tried freecycle but no luck and short or driving around in the dark looking for crumbling walls I'm drawing a blank - any suggestions?

Try eBay. I was looking for some yesterday and they all seem to be in your area (lots of York stone). Cheap though? Forget it! :(
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Geoff Hamilton made some fake rocks on Gardeners World once. I think he used compost, sand and cement mixed with water and put in a hole in the ground lined with plastic.

I'd suggest using a hypertufa mixture to make artificial rocks. Do a Google search of "hypertufa recipes" or look for instructional videos on YouTube.

I've never heard of hypertufa, it sounds like a good idea.
