Life & Critical Illness Claim - Help Needed

Hi there,
My Wife and i took out life and critical illness cover with Norwich Union when we bout our house back in 2003. Aviva Has since taken over the policy. It is a Mortgage Term Assurance policy
Sadly my wife has been diagnosed with Cancer and we are now in a position where we would like to claim from the policy. However i want to make sure that we get it right. As i suspect these things are designed not to pay out!
The cancer is covered under the critical illness policy as far as i understand it. My questions are for anyone here with experiance of claiming or who advise on policies.
1) Do you think the terms and conditions could have changed when the policy was transferred to Aviva?
2) My wife is the homemaker and doesn't work . Does that make any bearing on the claim?
3) Should we get a lawyer to do it for us?
Any other help or advise would be welcome.
Thank you
/Nathan

Just for clarification, it wasnt taken over by Aviva. It was a name change only. In the rest of the world the company traded as Aviva. In the UK it traded under Norwich Union. It was common sense, although quite sad that they moved to Aviva in the UK.As i suspect these things are designed not to pay out!
Over 90% of claims are paid out. There is a misconception on these things. Although there were periods in the past when some insurers were a bit heavy handed in rejections.1) Do you think the terms and conditions could have changed when the policy was transferred to Aviva?
No. No transfer took place as explained and T&C are set at the outset.2) My wife is the homemaker and doesn't work . Does that make any bearing on the claim?
no3) Should we get a lawyer to do it for us?

dunstonh,
Thank you very much for your comments they are very welcome! And helps makes things a lot clearer.
Could i pose an additional question?
If the terms and conditions have changed over the last 9 years since we signed the contracts are we covered by the original terms or the new ones?
I just want to make sure we do it correctly :-)
Thank you again

Hi Nathan,
I am sorry to see from your post that your wife is unwell. If I can be of any assistance I am happy to help.
If you would like me to look into your query I will need some more information. To do this I will require:- The full name/s showing on policy
- Full postal address
- Date of birth for policy holder/s
- Policy reference number
Kind regards
