Do you get your old passport back (UK) ?

Hi everyone
This sounds a bit weird, but we've just received our new UK passports, and we haven't been given back our old ones. We really wanted them back, as we had a one day visa to Jordan in it, on the day we got engaged.
In other people's experience, is the old passport sent in the same package, or in a different one?
Advice appreciated!
