Hi, just thought people may like to know that when an engineer was looking at my meter yesterday he advised me that British Gas were now not allowed to charge a weekly standing charge and that I should ask them to refund this too me, just wondered if this would be of use to anyone or if anyone has had experience of this, does anyone know if this would apply to the pre payment gas meter I have with British Gas as well?????

If they were not allowed to add a standing charge, no supplier would be able to.

They have a no standing charge pay as you go tariff so suggest you check if you are on it.

  • All meters pay a standing charge, the pre pays I see are set at £1.85 a week but about 50% of the prepays (actaris meters only) can be set to take the standing charge off built in to the units at tier 1 at 24.7 p kwhr.(British Gas rates )

Doesn't Bgas mention this is available to Actaris KBD's? So, perhaps its only those?

As Terry says, you if your meter is an Actaris KBD, then you should have no standing charge on standard tariff. Other tariffs do have a standing charge.
sacsquacco is right that if you don't have this programmed on your meter you pay the equivalent on your first units.

The opposite of what the engineer said is likely to be true soon - Ofgem want everyone to move to a standing charge tariff.
  • Landys and Gyr prepay only ever shows a weekly standing charge,Actaris KBD can also show a weekly standing charge but is the only prepay I see which can be programmed for "no standing charge "
