Internet speed query

Can anyone please explain this and hopefully offer a solution please?
We have just upgraded to a 10Mb with Virgin Media. We have a Belkin Wireless Router, a desktop machine and a laptop. The desktop machine is connected to the router by cable and the laptop wirelessly.
Using https://www.speedtest.net the desktop machine achieves download speeds of, on average, 9.7Mb/s whereas the laptop (which has a faster processor than the laptop) only achieves approx. 3Mb/s.
I have even tried connecting the laptop to the router by cable with very little improvement.
Any ideas?

what do you have running? Norton? Limewire? this could be one problem. When you connect it to ethernet make sure you disable the wireless so it isnt using that. Then take the speed test.Things that are free in life are great, well most of the time :beer:0

Thanks for the suggestions but I'm not running Norton or Limewire. Just AVG Free and I did disable the wireless connection when using cable.

Problem solved. Got rid of AVG Free and replaced it with another antivirus proggy. Full speed ahead now!

I have to say I do find it a bit strange that avg would slow your internet connection...0

I would be surprised at that as well, although I have had serious problems with firewalls and the internet connection in the past (at one point Zone Alarm free was limiting my effective connection to 2mb rather than 10mb).
Unless AVG was actively checking the data as it was being sent/received before passing it onto the machine.
If you want a free AV package Avast is pretty good, and doesn't affect my internet connection at all.0 -
Just tried the speed test with and without AVG running and got the same results (I mean there was no difference in the results - not the same results as Bargin)0
