Changing details with Eon energy gas

Hi there i was wondering if anyone can help me. I am a first time student and moved into a student flat where we had a prepay top up card with southern electric. A man from Eon energy came round and told us to swtich to them as they were cheaper. So we did, but gave my details for it. Now we are leaving the flat i do not want them to have my details anymore but they are saying if we cancel they'll have to send us a final bill and then i dont know if the new people coming in would be able to use the card etc. I don't know what to do?! When we moved int he card was just already in use and did not have to do anything for it.
Any help will be much appreciated!

    Hi mcqueend,

I hope you don't mind me popping on to this thread. :)

Do you know if Eon is supplying your property or is your supply coming over to us?

If your supply is with us then what you need to do is, give us a call and advise us that you're moving and we'll close down your account and send you a final bill.

Then when the new tenants move in, they'll call us to set up a new account and we'll send them a new key if we need to.

  • Hi amy,
I'm not sure what you mean about the supply. the gas card is from Eon. i do not understand why we would get a final bill though as we are on a pay as you go meter so just use what we've paid for. Also i am unsure what to do as when we moved in the southeren electric card was already there and we did not have to set up a new account with them, so is there a way the new tenants wont have to do that with this account, can it just go on being used without an account name as its just a top up card?

You always have to have an account set up with your supplier. They get your payments and use the readings taken by the card as you pay to produce a statement for your records. I'm surprised that your previous supplier hasn't done this as a change of supply means producing a reading for both old and new supplier to close down and open up with.

When you changed to Eon, they would have taken your details, set your account up and started to send you statements. It sounds like this hasn't been set up properly.

Don't worry about leaving the property, the landlord and next tenant can change suppliers if they wish but they will be in a Deemed contract with Eon for now. They just need to get a new key from the pay point so their payments hit their Eon account and not yours.

What you do need to do is take your readings when you move out to allow Eon to close your account down.

As long as your tenancy agreement says out are liable for utilities, there will be no issues with the landlord about it either.
