i see shell on a beach also whooped the traders whatsit down in price ,not a good idea because it implies youve inspected approved and are reducing the price for these ailments
ie in this case buying a torry canyon

food for thought you private punters who think you can beat the system for the sake of of the price of a bag of spuds spuds

Or then again, it implies the trader has tried it on, not got someones poor grandma in to sell a bucket of scrap to, and realised he has to shift it quick to the first interested punter before something dropped off the lemon onto his forecourt.Food for thought for all those pricing too high on the offchance?

Who's name was on the log book? If its not his name then you'll have more rights. We are going through the same thing ATM but to the tune of 4.5k!

I can assure you shellonabeach is indeed reading every post and listening to every bit of advice given. I always ask for a reduction when buying cars, usually 10%. The reduction in price was just a cheeky ask which I didn't think would be accepted.

For information I bought myself a 2006 Golf 2 years ago from a private seller at a very good price (plus £500 reduction I negotiated) mainly because it had higher than average miles and this has been a very good car, as was the car before it which I also bought privately and kept for 9 years. This Focus is the first car I have ever bought from a trader!

Car buying is a stressful business and when there is only a small amount of money to replace a car which was stolen we have struggled to find anything decent. Of course the car which was stolen wasn't worth anything on paper but was a decent reliable car which never gave us any trouble.

Thank you to all of those who have offered advice and I will update this post to let people know how I get on

if you did read all the posts then you would clearly have read post 11 where i told you to go back with it yesterday
the longer you mess about the harder it will be as he spends your money,i also see you bought above your station and bought the plate rather than the car
always a bad idea and i always advise against buying high mileage 1600 petrol foci but if you did your homework or had a proper inspection by someone in the know they would have told you this (hint try locating an engine for one, they are rocking horse unless you pay top top dolla)

im not having a go im just telling you how it is

im a motor trader by the way i see allsorts

your post doesnt make sense but the trader has tried it on and succeeded to offload a real lemon
this is why op needs to go back now with it and park up his drive not wait for him to reply to letters emails or carrier pigeon
this is why scoundrils get away with it because they just laugh in your face
you have to man up to them or let them pull your pants down

Yes its easy to hide behind words and letters

We have tried calling again today but still no answer (and yes tried with-holding the number!)

We will take the car back to his house tonight and speak to him face to face, letter is in the post already incase he is not in tonight.

And no his name is not on the log book and I hope your case gets resolved quickly!

3 golden rules to buying a second hand car from a "private" seller for under £2K

    1. The call, dial the number and ask about the "car for sale" do not name the type or make, this will very quickly establish a trader as they need to know "which car" expect any dealer car to have come straight from the auctions where it will have been sold with many serious faults.
    2. Never leave a deposit you are not prepared to loose and if you do leave a deposit, expect to loose it, go back with the full price in cash, if its gone, its gone, buy another.
    3. Remember you will be in "must have it now mode" take another person and ask them to pull you up on everything you brush aside in must have GREEN MIST mode and ask them to make a written list of faults or points and get them to remind you constantly, you are buying a car not a story about the last owner.

follow these simple rules and you will be harder to con.

Quick update from me is that OH spoke to seller this evening. It appears the seller hasn't a clue on his obligations or buyers rights. He implied he knew the vehicle had a fault, refused to accept it back which is what we asked for as we told him we were rejecting the vehicle under the SOGA and voluntarily said he would not repair it either.

He kept saying what did we expect with an old cheap car... the advert stated it was in excellent condition throughout and that was what I expected.

He now has 14 days to respond to the letter formally rejecting the car and from that point trading standards will hopefully remind him of what his obligations are...

    Maybe its the same dealer!

Ours has refused too. Gathering more info and will send another letter next week. He has already stated he has no money, so may be difficult to get it back through court.
