This is not always possible. I moved a couple of months ago and my mortgage lender would not confirm that they would lend to me until I had put an offer in that had been accepted. Santander would not confirm either a mortgage offer or an amount that they would consider lending me until the offer was in and accepted.
In which case your offer could be "subject to finance" or similar which means your solicitor must know your position. The last time we bought, our offer was "subject to the home report being acceptable to the purchaser's lender" or something very close to that. The bank would only formally confirm this when they issued the mortgage offer so it had the same effect.0
