what gas supplier to use and cost vs electricity

Hi All,
I have just moved in to a flat that does have a gas in addition to electricity

I have never been in a flat/house that had a gas and I was responsible for making the payment thus don’t know the cost of it plus the unit used for it( I will google it) for example kwh for electricity

What I want to find out is, when going on the websites to compare gas price what should I look for, does gas have something like economy 7, whereby you have two readings for peak and off peak?

Secondly, what do you reckon an average gas usage for 2 adults will be where most of the day they are out and the flat is only occupied at night. I do like cold and can stand it so don’t turn on the heather that often so I guess my usage will be much less during winter so if you have any figures in mind please shoot it.
I am asking for this figure so I can input those to the comparison website and also calculate my yearly usage.
Electricity is with ovo so if anyone suggests them for gas them I will use them depending on their tariff and price or if anyone has any suggestion on what to use please do share it

Thanks to all

Gas only has one rate. You might (in my opinion) use around 10,000kWh per year but that is just a guess you could use half that or double that depending on a lot of factors. The only way to know for sure is to move in and keep a weekly log of meter readings. I would not pick a fixed rate to begin with but pick a variable non fixed term rate that you can leave at any time without penalty when you find out your actual usage figures. It'll cost a little more but should be cheaper if you can leave if you have either over or under estimated your usage.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Gas can have two rates if there is no standing charge. A higher rate for the first amount of gas used and a lower rate for anything more.

There can be accounts with a standing charge or no standing charge. A no standing charge tends to favour people with very low usage because a standing charge is paid whether the energy is used or not. Usage would need to be very low to benefit.

The energy usage can vary depending upon the property such as double glazed, insulation of walls and pipes and the length of time the gas/electric is used. If you don't mind the room below the regular temperatures of about 20C for the lounge then it will significantly lower your usage. Some homes are stiflingly hot IMO and I cannot stand being in them myself.

The average medium usage for gas per year is 16500kwh and that would be for a lounge temperature of 20C.

If you have temperatures of 17C for a few hours a night I would estimate that you will use at a very rough guess 7000kwh possibly less. I use approx 6600kwh (I have my yearly bill here so that's not a guess) with temperatures of about 15-16.5C but for the whole day (15 to16 hours) for a 3 bed mid terrace and a very inefficient building with no cavity walls. Hot water usage is also low so another saving for me. The higher the indoor temperature, the more heat is lost at an ever increasing level. That explains why my usage is so low even with an inefficient building. Keeping the temperature down can dramatically reduce bills. Wearing warm clothes indoors rather than sitting around in T shirts like some people do, can make a very big difference.

Check for separate gas and electricity and dual fuel.
