Would definately recommend that first years go into halls, as that is where they generally get their first taste of independence, learning to look after themselves but still with some degree of support.
They get a real taste of Uni life and are able to participate in all the activities they want without having to worry about travelling home late at night, whether or not they will be on time in the mornings for lectures etc. They also get the chance to form friendships with people to share in during year 2.
I would also suspect that by living off campus it is easy to feel excluded. DD always has somebody to go out with, has tried lots of different hobbies etc (because everyone in the halls has different interests) is always partying/going out etc. The skills learnt in halls has now prepared her for moving into rented accommodation with a few friends.0
