chillis want to go out

My chillis are big and strong and they want to be out but it is so wet. We are warmish south west, night is about 8 at the moment

They seem good at putting up with cool but can they cope with wet?

Do they really want to go outside?

When is your last frost due?

Chillies don't really like outside tbh. A greenhouse would be better. IIRC they need about 15'C at night for optimum growth and productivity.

Chillies don't like the wet. The drier the better. I keep mine in the porch (it's like a mini conservatory) once the danger of frost is gone. I "abused" my chillies last year by not watering them for weeks at a time and they were very happy, producing lots! Chillies are weird :D
  • I didn't get much joy from my peppers when I put them out after last frosts in 2011 but the chillis simply didn't like it at all and grew a few small leaves but no fruit. The ones I kept inside, on the other hand, were very successful. I'd keep them inside although putting them out during the warmer days will be quite alright and help with pollination.

Thanks. Mmm food for thought, I last grew chillis 3 years ago and got dozens outside on 3 plants in `neglected` pots. I have various peppers and chillis that are meant to be good outside ie `king of the north`.

Oh well I can only keep 3 under cover, so the rest will have to go out. I think `i`ll leave them as long as possible anyway. Tricky weather this year

They won't like being waterlogged, and the leaves will go yellow, so make sure there is good drainage. They also cannot cope with temperatures near freezing, and will die. Capsicum annuum will grow okay outdoors in the UK if started indoors to allow a long enough growing season. I grew some Tabasco outdoors in south Devon and they did not ripen. Some grown indoors were triffids. Jalapeno (C. annuum) grown outdoors in Devon were okay.
