Please Advise - Someone Wants To Buy A Domain Off My Son

Does anyone have any experience of selling a domain that they own after someone has contacted them to buy it?

My son has a .net domain (I won't say what it is so please don't ask) and on some domain valuations sites, it's valued as low as $60 and on others potentially going into hundreds if not a couple of thousand so not much use there.

A U.S. based hosting firm has asked if he would be prepared to sell a domain and if so, for how much. He's a musician and his site of 7 years relates to his music - it's his act name, but the act name is also a generic term and also a saying in everyday use. It would be an excellent domain for a company associated with a large portion of the health world for sure.

What kinds of things should be taken into account if he does want to agree to sell it in order to come up with a realistic figure?

Thanks.

Ask them to make an offer first.

Checkout sites like http://www.usp.net/domain-names_preregistered.php to get more info. They show site names that are up for sale and may give you an idea of what similar names go for.

If you think the site name may be valuable you would be advised to use a solicitor.

We’ve had a couple of these, always ends up with being asked to pay a fee to be introduced to a buyer. I’ve always assumed it’s a scam but they might actually have buyers but I doubt it.

Anyone can write to the web master of any site and make an offer so I don’t actually see any point in have any type of middle man.

I just spoke to my son and he's not responded to them. He was thinking how it could be a scam since he has received e-mails about the site but none to buy it before. He thought they may go along the lines of "well if you want us to pay £x, then we need to know it's worth it with a valuation certificate" and ask him to use a domain valuation service they will recommend with some sort of added encouragement like "if it turns out more valuable, we'll pay more"... but they'll be related to that valuation company.
