Pet insurance for puppy recommendation

I am getting a puppy and have just started looking for pet insurance but there seems to be so much to think about. Does anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks

  • I have all 4 of my dogs insured with Protect your bubble...as they a) insure my older dogs for a reasonable rate and b) they offer three grades of insurance depending on your finances.
My older dogs are insured for third party and only a limited amount of vets fees
my older dogs are insured for the middle grade which covers more.

If your vets do it, i would highly advise joining a pet scheme.
we pay £50 a month and for that we get
    bi-annual checkups
    weight checks
    vaccinations
    kennel cough vaccines
wormers all year round and flea treatments
10% off consulations and other things such as discounted neutering etc.

mush easier than paying as things come up!

If from a decent breeder it should come with 4 weeks Pet Plan or Kennel Club insurance.

A basic rule is to go with a specialist pet insurance provider, either of the above are good, but not cheap. Avoid catch all insurers such as bubble etc as they are more likely to pull specific products which make little money (see threads on Halifax/Lloyds).

    BUT please avoid Animal Friends.

I currently have 6 dogs and they are all insured with Pet Plan.
I have found them to be brilliant and although a little more expensive than others I have never had any problems whatsoever in any of my claims.
I have tried others including L&A who were a complete nightmare.
Just be careful about the conditions.
Some insurers will exclude ongoing medical complaints when your yearly renewal comes round. The policy i have with Pet Plan allows ongoing treatment. This was invaluable when one of my dogs got Diabetes. (sadly passed away now).

My vote goes for PetPlan - they are not the cheapest, but in my opinion, they are the best.

My vet won't deal direct with any other insurer, as the others tend to mess vets around and don't always pay out.

Harley is almost 'middle aged' now, so theer is no way I am going to risk losing out on the level of cover we have for him for the sake of a few quid a month short term saving
  • VetsMediCover gets my vote. They have been totally brilliant and super speedy when processing my claim.

Someone mentioned not to use them but I liked Animal Friends alot. Stupid me renewed with More Than to get cash back and then ended up claiming loads so am stuck with them forever now! Service not bad but excess amounts are terrible! Silly silly me!

Animal Friends are cheap... for a reason! They are the devils work and I don't know of any vet that will accept a direct claim from them. They impose crazy exclusions and make it really not worth insurance.

If you can afford it Petplan, or try Pet Protect.

From masses of experience Animal Friends excesses will always be larger than More Than. Standard 35% on animals over 8... and thats just the start. Capping fees, refusing referals... You are safer with More Than.
