Activating a BT line whilst currently with Virgin

Need some advice.

I'm paying over the odds with Virgin and want to switch to Tesco phone and broadband. I called the nice people at Tesco and they said I need to contact the Post Office in order to activate my BT land line first. My question is, if I activate the phone line with BT does that throw out the services i'm currently paying for with virgin?

If I cancel the Virgin media first and let the service end, then contact the Post Office to activate the line and then contact Tesco I could be left without anything for three or four depending on Tesco's set up times. I'd rather cancel the virgin media (needs a months notice) then after a week sign up to Tesco safe in the knowledge that their three week set up time will tie in nicely with my Virgin media expiring.

No, Virgin is a cable service and BT is the completely separate PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Service).

BTW, although the Post Office do offer a landline service, they are not BT.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Sign up with your new provider first, then give notice to VM once you have the start date. Even with a reconnection, you are not likely to be on the ADSL service in less than 3 weeks.

Nonsense. Virgin National is a full ADSL service and should not be confused with the cable-only service. Assuming you have Virgin National, yes, there will be loss of service as the routings are switched, but you need to give VM 30 days notice (or a greater amount in you are on any minimum term).

Nonsense? Since the OP has been advised to get their BT line activated first, it's fairly obvious that they are currently on a VM cable service, not Virgin National.
    Why do you assume otherwise?
