sorry, I don't know! I still haven't bought one and I have been so busy I haven't had a chance to do as much research as I wanted to. I'm planning a trip into town to have a look in John Lewis.

I bought a Janome from Dunhelm Mill at the weekend, It is only £119 but I am very impressed so far. Not sure if it would do heavy quilting, but I have done 4 layers of poly cotton including one with heavy duty interfacing attached.

Hi there have just bought a Janome6260 Quilters companion, it is fab and I got some free stuff with it too. Can't remember where from though, will see if I can find receipt later. It's easy to use and quite quiet. very pleased with it.

Thank you all again for your comments and suggestions. My sewing machine just wouldn't work today (can't finish my quilt by tonight like I wanted grrr!) and I have finally got some time off, so I've started looking a bit more seriously and as I'm planning a trip to JL tomorrow, I started with there website and found this:

What do you think? Has anybody got a JL machine. I like it because it does all fabrics and is pretty much all purpose so whether I want to make a skirt or sew up a quilt, it should be suitable.

erm, change of plan... I think I like this one now: http://www.johnlewis.com/231340608/Product.aspx

I like the idea of a mechanical machine rather than electronic or computerised. Less to go wrong!

This is getting as difficult as choosing a toothbrush!!

I made my decision on Friday and bought this one :

    http://www.johnlewis.com/231340608/Product.aspx

I used it for the first time this morning and so far so good. The manual is easy to understand. The machine has enough stitches for me but not too many so that I wouldn't use them all. I completed 2 tasks this morning (after sampling all the stitches). One task was to repair a cut on my cotton pyjama bottoms and the other was to sew up the quilt I made for my dd which, at her request, is made with 7oz wadding. It performed both tasks really well and I'm really happy!

Now I need a new sewing project!

Thank you to all of you who posted on this thread. It really helped make my final decision.
