File encryption for email

I am looking for a windows file encryption application to encrypt files for sending through email. The recipient should be able to open the file with a password and not need the application. Anyone got suggested solutions that are safe?

PGP (now owned by symantec) is probably the best (although it costs).

Winzip or Winrar can both create encrypted self extracting archives.

You'll want AES encryption at least in any software you look at.

Thanks that's a good idea. I was going to use 7zip - but when I send the self extracting file the recipient gets a 'dangerous application' in their anti virus. is 7Zip safe?

Yes. Alas, most email services automatically flag executables as 'suspicious' regardless of their source.

Note: The AxCrypt install program now uses Open Candy to bundle/install third party software with AxCrypt.
