You're more likely to get a higher payout for the vehicle from your own Insurers due to them needing to abide by the Ombudsman for instance them needing to use the average of the guides.

Direct with a third party Insurer they don't need to abide by the Ombudsman, at worst case they would just use what a court would rule which would not include the average of the guides. They'll just pick the lowest of the guides.

The OP said their car was significantly damaged so I doubt they would want it repaired and if so their own insurers have to provide guarantees on the work that a third party Insurer would not
