Do I need Norton?

Can someone please tell me how a program that you can download for free is better than one which millions? of people pay for. Who pays the cost of writing it, maintaining it and keeping it up to date with all the threats? If the freebie is better, why don't Norton/Mcafee just copy the software? I'm told that NASA use Norton so I'm thinking why don't they use the freebie? I don't know enough about anything to argue but a wee explanation would be very helpful?
Norton's corporate solution is an entirely different beast, and is actually quite good. Personally Peter Norton holds god like status for me, and symantec's website is amongst the first I visit should I need to to sort a problem. The home market product has been pathetic since almost the beginning. It's not that it isn't good at Anti Virus etc, just the side effects of slowing down your PC, and causing endless problems that brings me and many other people working on PCs professionally to have such a low opinion of it.0 -

why did avg not find the infected files that norton found ? ?
people have different views, people have had different experiences, people have different pc uses, people have different software etc etc.
dont really think there is a right or wrong answer to whats best.
the debate will always arise
just use what your happy with and back it up with an alternative scan eg pandas online that was mentioned above.but best of all common sense. no need to be opening the attachments you wasnt expecting etc. imo0 -
I've been using Kaspersky for a couple of years and I have to say its fantastic. Despite downloading a lot of stuff off the net, I have never once been infected with viruses or spyware. Their customer service is second to none in my experience, and for those benefits I am happy to pay for it.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

I saw a report some months back that compared how quickly AV vendors got new definitions out and Kaspersky were right at the top of the pile.
Just curious, straw poll if you like, how often do folks on here get updates with their progs ?
I use NOD32 and get between 2-6,7 and sometimes even 8 a day - I sometimes leave my PC on 24/7 - that's when I get the higher number

Also get updates with Kaspersky every Hour (as shown on the left of this site: http://www.kaspersky.com/viruswatch3).
I normally get a reply from them (if i send a suspected virus/FP to them) within hours and if its infected, it gets added in the next update (after I get the reply).0
