Looking for a reasonably priced Garmin sat nav

Need a sat nav & have by using a friends' Garmin.

It is so easy to use that I have decided to buy my own.

Looking for recommendations of where to buy one for a reasonable price.

I would be looking for a Garmin which supports speed camera facility.

While a new sat nav advice thread has come up - I'm also looking at buying a Garmin for my old man.

Couple questions:
1. Is this the easiest for an older person to use?
(he got inspired by going on a trip to france with a friend so I know a Garmin one is the one he likes)
2. Can you get live traffic updates on ANY system without an annual subscription?
(doesn't matter if it's a higher initial cost, he just has a thing with recurring payments for anything!)

To answer my own question 2 - Garmin do do the free lifetime map and traffic updates, although they are ad supported, which I'm wary about.
