British Gas shares from the 80's

Hi there folks!
I was wondering if anyone would be able/willing to give me some advice. I was talking to my mother recently and she mentioned that my father had bought shares in British Gas back when they first went public. Unfortunately my father passed away quite some time ago (late 1997) and a lot of his paperwork was lost in the following months.
My mother doesn't know what happened with the shares and assumes that they were just left behind. I contacted Centrica by email and they suggested that I contact Equiniti with his name, death certificate and address etc. I recieved a response from them today saying they couldn't find any record with his name and that they would "need to identify the holding exactly as it is registered". They have suggested I re-submit with the name, previous addresses and a holding designation (which I obv don't have) so I can't see them being able to help.
So my question really is whether people know of any alternative routes I might take to gathering the required information? It seems the original shares have changed since then as british gas become BG plc etc so I imagine that might be an issue.
I'm new to all this so any help or advice with this would be awesome!
Cheers guys!

name, previous addresses
Submit where he lived on the IPO date then list forward from that to 1997
Unless he had a really rare name they'll need the specifics to pin it down.
The company split and they are all successful, its not that much of an issue once you prove ownership exists originally8 December 1986 its shares floated on the London stock market. In the hope of encouraging individuals to become shareholders, the offer was intensely advertised with the "If you see Sid...Tell him!" campaign. The initial public offering of 135p per share valued the company at £9 billion, the highest equity offering ever at the time.
British Gas plc was demerged to form two separate companies on 17 February 1997.
Shareholders received one BG share and one Centrica share for every British Gas share.0 -

As well as BG and Centrica, there was also Lattice plc which is now part of National Grid.0 -

British Gas shares were split Centrica / BG Group. Transco was split off from BG Group and became part of Lattice which then merged with National Grid to form National Grid Transco. Since then they dropped the name Transco and are now just National Grid.
Potentially there could now be shares in Centrica, BG, and National Grid if you held the original shares issued by Sid in 1986.
However all this happened after 1997, so no idea what would have happened to the shares after his death.0
