I agree it looks like a bad deal - but these were self-employed roles,
Two points:
1) If they're self employed then the bloke has no right to moan that he can't get staff OR those that he 'hired' didn't turn up
2) From my own contact with the company, they never once told me these roles were self employed. Thats usually one of the first things they mention however this company said NOTHING about it.0 -
What is the difference from the JC or me being on JCA and applying from seeing your advert?Hi all
Just to reply to a few comments here. I do accept applications from people claiming JSA, just not via the JC+. So people can apply (or use the recruitment company) with no issues. I don't trust the JC+ to vet people correctly, so I use someone else. Plus the associated paperwork the JC+ require for each candidate who applies (and never turns up) was a small industry in itself.
So I don't think all JC+ people are crap (I think I said earlier 10% were genuine IMO) its just I don't use them to advertise vacancies.

I'd still be on JCA0 -

The difference being that the Jobcentre often put forward applicants that are not suitable at all. They might have cleaning experience but be put forward as a chef in a restaurant just to keep some snotty benefits advisor happy.
Finding the job and applying seperately is different - you know what you are suited to and apply accordingly.0 -
The JC put me forward for a numerous jobs that I just couldn't do, including managing a coffee shop (I have no experience of the catering industry) and being a hairdresser in an afro caribbean hairdresser (I am white and I have no interest at all in hairdressing!). The only one I applied for that I actually got an interview for was to be an admin ast, at the min wage. I didn't get the job (my interview lasted barely a minute) as they said I would be bored out of my mind as this was work I did twenty years ago.
Having said that it might also have been because the first thing they showed me was their new posters they'd just had made up, and I pointed out a spelling mistake. I used to be an English prof and I just said it without thinking!!
So I agree that the JC does waste an awful lot of employers' time by sending the wrong candidates.0 -
the JC can't put you forward without your say so and if you do not have the experience then the employer should take it up with the JC not take it out on the applicantTrickyWicky wrote: »The difference being that the Jobcentre often put forward applicants that are not suitable at all. See the post above yours.MissSarah1972 wrote: »and if you do not have the experience then the employer should take it up with the JC not take it out on the applicant
Most employers are too busy cost cutting and trying to keep turning a profit to want the hassle of complaining to a massive government department that refuses to listen to anyone but its superiors.0 -

I think you misunderstand self employment. If I do a 3 month contract on a self employed basis, then my client expects me to turn up at the office on time, ready to work.2) From my own contact with the company, they never once told me these roles were self employed. I said before - I agree it's a bad deal, and looks shoddy.
I'm just saying that NMW doesn't apply, because people keep going on about it.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
I think even self employed it is a bad deal, let alone if someone was actually on this persons book. But also as someone who was self employed i couldn't see myself being tied to just one employer.0

I have done sales jobs BOTH on the phone and door to door. I have worked for double glazing companies, alarm companies, fitted kitchen suppliers, my local newspaper (selling subscriptions to potential clients). The latter was the best company I have worked for in such a capacity.
Let me tell you something. IT AIN'T EASY! If you have the 'gift of the gab' so to speak, you'll do better than most. On the other hand, such people can come across as !!!!!!!!ters. In my opinion, having done door to door and telesales, door to door is easier from the point of view that you can eyeball the person at the door. You're a lot less likely to receive abuse. Over the phone, they can shout at you, abuse you and swear at you. It has happened to me! Of course, door to door sales does involve having to deal with inclement weather, tired feet and early winter nights.
Regarding the local newspaper I worked for door to door selling, I remember the first week which involved training. A group of about a dozen attended. By the end of the week about four of us were left! High pressure sales is not everyone's cup of tea.
So sales jobs are not as easy or as legit as some on this forum might think. I have done a couple of right stinkers in the past couple of years. One involved knocking on peoples doors asking them if they had an accident in the past three years! Absolutely soul destroying. I should've listed to my 'spider sense' as something told me the 'company' was dodgy. The initial 'interview' was in a local Holiday Inn for gawds sake!!! The pay was commission only of course. I lasted a couple of days!
Positions such as this and the one being discussed are ten a penny I'm afraid. They will seek to take advantage of people and the prevailing economic condition. Sales positions in my experience are overpopulated by sharks in badly fitted suites!
Many good points have been made so I will not repeat them. Just to give my experience in this arena.0 -

Sounds like a copy of my CV from a few years back.0
