Smelly microwave - any ideas??

Hi, we have an 18 month old Samsung microwave. It's probably used on average once a day. It always smells of food (curry etc.), no matter how long since its last use. Every week I thoroughly clean the inside and take out and wash the glass turntable but it makes no difference. It puts me off warming up milk in there as I dont want it to be tainted with strong food smells.
Additionally, whilst cleaning it I've noticed that the enamel-looking surface of the interior top has sort if burnt- it's all bubbling and blistered.
I wondered whether any MSE-ers had any ideas.

Fill an egg cup half vinegar half water and let it boil it nearly dry, the smell will be goneHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

squeeze the juice from a lemon into a bowl of water and let it boil away in the microwave. Nice and fresh in a few mins!!Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0

Get smaller portions from the takeaway then you wont have all those leftovers to heat up for breakfast the next day.

Or is that just me?
Do you always cover food when you cook/reheat?
I use something like this . I find it helps contain the smell as well as keeping the microwave clean.
Also if I'm heating something like gravy that may boil over I stand it on a plate as well. Much easier to wash than the microwave turntable.0 -
Yes we always either cover food or (more usually) it's in a covered microwave-meal container. I always joke that I can tell my sister is 'cooking' by the 4 stabs of fork into plastic followed by the click as the microwave door opens!!!
I did try the above suggestions and who knew that lemon juice could burn?? I was checking on it every minute or so and I looked in and it had turned black and the smell of curry had been replaced by that of burning!!! The next time I used vinegar and didn't leave it for so long...
Thanks for help.0 -
Do yourself and your family a favour and throw it out. Microwaves alter food and are damaging to health.
I was using one until it broke down and while looking for a replacement I came across articles on microwaves that made me look further at their effects on food and human health. Cutting it short, I didn't replace it. Look at the research yourself, Russia banned them and Swiss scientists got gagged for many years until they managed to get it lifted.
We take for granted what is sold is safe, but that isn't necessarily the case.0 -

Not being funny, but do you seriously believe this? There are plenty of studies which show that they cause no problems.
In what way do they alter food to make it damaging to health?

I considered giving up food altogether as so much of it is 'bad for you' but apparently the side effects of that are even more dangerous.A.Penny.Saved wrote: »Do yourself and your family a favour and throw it out. Microwaves alter food and are damaging to health.
I'd love to know what these (proven) health effects are. I've been using a microwave for over 25 years and have yet to find any.0 -

OH MY G.. WERE ALL GOING TO PEG IT FROM EATING MICROWAVED FOOD !!
If you want to clean the inside of a microwave , the best way is to get a large potatoe , stab it with a knife a few times put it on kitchen paper in the microwave for 10- 15 minutes on full power
when done or nearly done
remove HOT potatoe , wipe inside microwave with kitchen roll until dry (inside door as well )
leave door open to cool down !
have done this for many years and it gets rid of the wife's favourite microwaved food ........... KIPPERS or any other fish
and they stink to high heaven  :eek:0 -
Not true! The studies are only about energy leakage from microwaves which is an entirely different thing. There are not plenty of studies saying there are no ill effects.retepetsir wrote: »Not being funny, but do you seriously believe this? Are you too poor that your ISP doesn't give access to search engines? I have mentioned two things to look at already. There are break down products due to the violent effect that microwave energy has on food.In what way do they alter food to make it damaging to health?
Ignorance is bliss.......
My Sharp microwave lasted 27 years, however I didn't cook much food in it, mainly heating liquids. Water is the safest thing to microwave.VoucherMan wrote: »I considered giving up food altogether as so much of it is 'bad for you' but apparently the side effects of that are even more dangerous.

Just because you used it for 25 years doesn't mean that you have not been adversely affected because you don't know how things would of been if you hadn't used one. You might feel like a 21 years old if you hadn't used one for 25 years
..............If you could find one that would have you :rotfl: 0
