Help - screen contrast

Hi All
I hid my laptop away from my kids recently as a punishment and when I gave it back to them I noticed that I could hardly read the screen as the contrast appeared to have readjusted itself! My fault for taking it from them I hear you say!
Anyway as I can barely see what's on the screen, how do I adjust the settings back?
By the way the screen pixel resolution had changed too, but I managed to re-set those back using Control Panel, Display and sliding the slider along.
The laptop is totally unusable until the contrast/brightness is increased, so I would appreciate any help!

Make/model number? Usually adjusted with a function key combination. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0

It's a Toshiba about 4-5 yrs old. I'm at work so can't give you specific model information. I did try all of the function key combinations but I may not have hit fn+f8 more than once!
I'll try that.
If there are any other ways pls let me know though.
