I wonder if this could lead to further calls for regional independence for the Basque Country

Including areas of France not just Spain. Very nationalistic towards their own heritage.

Have just read that Spain has initiated border checks ahead of the ECB meeting in Barcelona to ensure that protesters don't enter the country:

What we dont know about Spain is the make up of their adult population....just like here if you dont know where to look...but one of the benefits of the internet is its now at your fingertips..
So Spain has an unemployment rate of 25%...but this may include some of the parts we split into groups...
The UK...we have 2.5m on the dole...1.5m are claiming money..
We have over 3m on sickness benefit...we have 2m on further education...uni etc ...which is up from a few hundred thousand in a decade...
We have millions early retired on final salary pension...which wont be happening in the future as these schemes are being phased out..
So back to our real figures not working...nearly 10 million people under 65 yo...30% of the adult population...published every month...

In Spain the economically inactive rate is around 40% - economically active is 16 to 65. Economically active is 59.94% - good bit less than here.

It varies by region - the region with the lowest economically active rate is Principado de Asturias - 51.3% are economically active - so almost half are economically inactive.

The best is Illes Balears with an economically active rate of 64.77%

The info is from the INE - the Spanish equivalent of ONS.

So using those figures Spain has 25% unemployed and a further 15% inactive...giving 40 % in total..
The UK has 2.5 million unemployed and 10 milion in total inactive...which is 4 times the unemployed...

Unemployment figures are calculated internationally using the same definitions.

The official unemployment rate measures the same thing in different countries.

If the UK unemployment rate is under 8%, and Spain's is 24%, then that is a good indicator of just how much better off economically the UK is at the moment.

You can get into all sorts of irrelevancies in trying to measure the economically inactive like housewives and students, but the simple fact is that not everyone without a job wants one or needs one, so it's a bit pointless.

Living here and over past few months have seen crime escalate, police are pretty notorious for stopping you for no reason and ...well say no more.
The Spanish hav had a charmed life since the late 80's and even now 2 years unemployment can be paid at full salary price of previous job.
Barclays are he biggest bank to be exposed to Spain .... It is not going to be 12 months but more like 6 months before the pooh and the fan meet !!!

    Spain population 46million

Population aged 16 or over 38.5million
    Active population 23million
    Empolyed 17.million
    Unemployed 5.6million
    Inactive 15.4million

    UK Population 62million

Population aged 16 or over 50million
    Active Population 31.8million
    Employed 29.1million
    Unemployed 2.6million
    Inacative 18.5million.

Those figures include the over 65s

If you look at just the working age population

    Spain

    Aged 16 - 64 30.6million
    Employment rate 56%
    Unemployment rate 24.5%
    Inactive 25%

    UK
    Aged 16 - 64 40million
    Employment rate 70.4%
    Unemployment 8.5%
    Inactive 23%

I guess the big difference is that in Spain almost half of the working age population aren't working - here it's a third.

I'm one of the economically inactive here, so is OH - we're early retired - don't need to work.

I remember looking at this a couple of years ago and believe it or not most of Europe has about the same inactivity rate as the UK, some are better and some are worse
    We are far from unique.

I can't see it now, but I seem to remember a few months back - probably something to do with Greece - that the size of the black economy in Spain is about twice the size of the UK. Not that they will be contributing in the traditional sense, but may have greater consumption etc.
