Converting Video Files

I've just downloaded a few video files, but they are in an MPeg 4 codec. I've tried playing these on both of my DivX players, but without any joy.
Is there any free programs out there that will convert these MPeg 4's to an AVI file, or any file really that will allow me to play on my divx player? I'm not really interested in converting them into a DVD format, as it takes up too much space.
Any suggestions/ advice would be appreciated...
