2 suspect e-mails- what to do?

Hi, I received two e-mails to my spare hotmail.com e-mail address which I give out when getting freebies etc to make sure all the junk mail goes to it instead of my main e-mail address. They were both sent on the same day (March 3) and both said the same thing but they were sent from different e-mail addresses. They read,

"Do not reply to this message

Dear Customer,

Our robot has fixed an abnormal activity from your IP address on sending
e-mails.
Probably it is connected with the last epidemic of a worm which does not have
patches at the moment.
We recommend you to install a firewall module and it will stop e-mail sending.
Otherwise your account will be blocked until you do not eliminate
malfunction.

Customer support center robot"

I have not downloaded the updates that came with them which are big long names with a scramble of letters and numbers and the hotmail virus scan result says, "Possible_Strat-2 Virus Found." Should I download them, delete them, report them to someone, get extra security....? Help much appreciated!

Don't download anything, delete the email, or better still identify it as spam in your email spam filter.

I had one of those. It had a zip file attached, with a filename in the same format as a Microsoft patch - KBxxxxx.

    I ignored it.

  • Dont trust anything that comes through by email, even if it looks to be from a friend or a trusted site, even MSE - it can all be faked. Check very carefully before trusting any links in a mail, its easy to reroute you to a site that isnt the one you thought it was. The URL may look genuine, but without a security certificate you cant know for sure.

Personally Id never trust a file sent through unless I was expecting it. Depends how paranoid you are though lol...

The appalling grammer wot they yuse shud be a klew.

Sorry, couldn't resist! Seriously, a lot of these come from abroad and use REALLY dodgy conversion technology which makes them dead easy to spot.

Delete them and don't lose any sleep. I'd also advise getting Mailwasher or similar as you can vet your email on the server and delete it there without having to mess with it on your own PC.
