Front porch

Hello there,
We are at the very early stages of planning to have a front porch.
We are trying to not have to have planning permission and understand that we can have an exterior footprint of 3 square metres.
If we built to this spec, what would the inside of the porch measure, I have no idea the size of bricks and gaps in a double skin.
Thanks in advance

You do not really need a double skin for a small porch.
However, for your information a standard cavity wall will be about 28cm from the outside to the inside. This includes a 5cm cavity between the two skins. A standard brick is about 10cm wide, it can vary a bit.
What do you mean when you say the porch is 3 square meters. Do you mean that it is 3 meters square, which is an entirely different thing. 3 square metres is a small porch. 3metres square is a large porch. Which is it.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
Typically, you should aim for an external dimension of 1.2 x 2.4 (4x8ft) as the 1.2 out gives enough room for a door to open with shuffling around it, and this shape does not look odd or out of proportion
Don't bother with a cavity wall, just a double brick (ie one brick wall) and this will be about 230mm thick with plaster. This gives a nice little internal cill too.
You could go for an all frame design with no walls, or minimum of 100mm brick and internal cladding of 50mm - timber, plastic or plasterboard if you want more space
Remember that there are other criteria for porches if you want to build without formal permission - its not just about floor area0 -

Thanks for that, the reason for the porch is mainly for heat.
We have warm air heating which has never been fed into the hall, there is a vent at the top of the stairs but the hall is always freezing in winter. Would a single brick wall do this. And yes, I read the other criteria about the height and the original main front door must stay in place. etc.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
