Seen a very nice, low mileage car so going to dealer tomorrow to have a closer look and might consider purchasing it. Any tips on getting a good deal?
We've already set a minimum discount and min we want on part ex. We also have reason to believe it has been used as demo/courtsery so going to try get some money off for that.

Compare the price of it with similar cars at other dealers and see how it stacks up. If its dearer then use that as a negotiating tool.
I'd rather have £100 off a £9K car rather than £1000 off a similar car at £10,500 at another dealers, so dont base it all on money off.0 -
It's cheapest one within traveling distance from my house and the dealer has four very similar ones for the same price, though I have my eye on the one with optional extras.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0

... and don't get too worked up on a min part-ex price.
It's the cost to swap that is all important. Let the dealer play whatever numbers game he wants as long as the price to swap is acceptable to you"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Whenever seller points out a plus point don't acknowledge it but respond with a negative point.
Take someone with you who will continually tell you that it s not a good deal and suggest going elsewhere.
Take a blanket and a torch and lie on ground and spend some time examaning underneath, make phone call in stage whisper and ask what is price of wheel bearing plus fitting.
Tell seller no one ever pays full asking price, you would be laughed at by friends if they knew you had, so what is price after 10% off.
Sometimes shock tactic can work but it can also backfire, make a straight offer of two thirds the price.
All of the above have worked for me at various times.0 -
While its interesting to hear a few haggling thoughts, if you offered me 2/3 of what I was asking, you would need that blanket to keep you warm before you got any further contact with me.0

I'm not sure I'd have the (metaphorical) balls to only offer 2/3.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0

as said you would just look foolish
work out your bottom dolla price
dont show interest in the one you want but work on another one first then ask about your wanted one
this way you will get an inkling if you are both talking same language
of course if they are advertising these cars with a good interest rate they might not even want you if you arent taking finance with them
its a very weird market at the moment0 -
I will be taking fiance, unfortunately it's the only way I'll be able to afford a decent car.
Thanks, s_b, will try playing it cool. I'm expecting maybe a few hundred off but that's it, especially as it's the same price as the ones without the extras.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0
