he has 6 points on his provisional licence (he got the points for messing around with his moped). will these transfer over to his car licence when he gets this? and anyone got any idea of cheaper insurance then the £3000 by the AA on his name and his mums which have been quoted. any ideas appreciated.

With six points at 17, he's going to get royally shafted. Try Quinn Direct, Tesco, the usual comparison sites and brokers who advertise in the back of car magazines.

yes his point will be transfered my son is with Quinn as they were the cheapest for him.

What sort of car is he getting?
  • ha! sorry, but IMHO if he's already got 6 points on his licence BEFORE he's even passed his test or got a car then we'd all be better off if he didn't get insured at all!

How does this work? A new driver with 6 points will be disqualified!

Special rules apply to drivers within two years of the date of passing their driving test if they passed the test after 1 June 1997 and held nothing but a provisional (learner) licence before passing the test. If the number of penalty points on their licence reaches six or more as a result of offences they commit before the two years are over (including any they committed before they passed the test), their licence will be revoked.

Basically afaik he cannot take his full test at all as soon as he gets his licence he will be automatically disqualified for having 6 points and will not be able to re-apply till these run out. I could however be wrong

If he doesn't yet have a full licence, they can't revoke it. He can still take the test after getting six points, but if he got any more (even three) the licence would be revoked and he'd be back to a provisional.

A revocation is not a disqualification Jamz - he's entitled to hold a provisional, even with six points on it. The situation is explained here.

Conversely, minors who have not yet passed a test are more likely to make mistakes and do things wrong than those with experience. Perhaps that makes it more forgiveable? £3000 for insurance is punishment enough.

    Can I help?
