Broadband and phone not working

Both my broadband and phone aren't wworking. I've been having problems with my broadband the last few days - it seems to take longer to load having previously been almost instantaneous. Trouble is it's a Toshiba c660 which doesn't link to wifi, hence I am dragging a 3 metere ethernet cable everywhere.
I think I am damaging the socket where the ethernet cable goes as sometimes if I fiddled the cable about it would load. I bought a new cable and the same thing happened so it isn't the cable at fault.

PLEASE anyone know what is going on? Bloody talk talk are making me get an engineer again.

I got a new router but still have the same problems. Interestingly the cordless phone I used alongside the broadband don't work but the corded phone I use in emergencies does work from the same socket, however the broadaband still won't.

I'm convinced all the rpoblmes stem from having to use cabled internet because my bloody toshiba c660 won't do wifi for some unfathomable reason.

One of the talk talk 'technical support' said the voltage was too high in the socket after doing a check. What does that mean?

If your cordless phone doesn't work but the corded one does then it sounds like there's a problem with the cordless phone - have you tried switching channels?

Do the lights on the router indicate that it has a broadband connection? If it does, do you have a friend with a laptop (or even a smartphone) who could connect to the router's wifi to see there is a broadband connection or not?

If the problem ultimately is your laptop then the answer would be either to get it's internal wifi adapter fixed - probably only worth doing if it's still under warranty - or just buy a USB wifi adapter and ditch the cable.

First things first.

1) If neither broadband nor phone are working, then the problem is more likely to be the supply or socket, and unlikely to be anything to do with the laptop or ethernet cable.

2) I'm presuming the RJ45 (ethernet) socket you think is damaged is the one on the laptop? Remove the RJ45 plug and look inside the socket. You will see 8 gold pins which should all be the same height. Any that are squashed or stuck down could cause connection problems.

Next to (or as part of) the socket you may find a small LED. This should light up when the plug is inserted (the other end of the lead needs to be connected to a network for this to happen)

Well you've done quite a lot already, what with a new ethernet cable and a new router, the only thing you appear not to have changed is the adsl filter!

Usually a wired connection is better than wireless, if you have a problem the first thing to do is check with a wired connection, so you're already part way there. Another way to check if the rj45 socket is damaged is to go into the command prompt (in accessories, with admin rights), and type "ipconfig" - without quotes. If it comes back with yr IP addresses eg 192.168.1.1 etc then it is talking to the router and yr rj45 socket is okay.

I agree with Figment that you may have an internal telephone socket/wiring issue. So I would trry to bypass it. Do you have an nte5 master socket on the premises? eg like this http://www.run-it-direct.co.uk/nte5-nte5a-bt-openreach-socket.html

If you have, undo the two small screws in front and gently tease the bottom half of the front panel away. Behind there you should find the test socket. Connect your router(s) into the test socket. If your PCs . routers dont work perhaps with different filters then you may well have a line problem (router diagnostics could tell us more). Also try your phones into the test socket. If that works your slave socket/internal wiring may be faulty?

Lastly tell us which browser you are using as resetting that may also help to eliminate issues.

Hmmmm, so the references to Wireless communication in the specifications

must be referring to something completely different and nothing to do with wifi! (Unless of course Toshiba made this model with and without wifi, which is extremely unlikely)

Perhaps the OP could provide the FULL product model number (C660-???)

I sold a almost new C660 recently (can't remember which sub model) but it did have wireless, I think most do. Nevertheless I'm not sure this is imperitive in resolving the greater issue of no broadband, maybe?

No it's not, but having just checked the forum, I discover that I was trying to help the OP with this apparent lack of wireless over a month ago, and he confirmed then that it DOES have wireless.
