Not quite sure what happens immediately after you buy (I last bought one online almost 9 years ago and can't remember), but to legally buy a number plate (from Halfords/motor accessory shop etc) you would need some sort of proof of ownership that the plate is yours such as V5 (your new one should come through in a few weeks), to get one made up, then you'd need to get a new VED disc with the new plate on it (I got mine from the local DVLA office).

Also don't forget to inform your insurance company.

thank you, that all makes sense to me. don't need it for a few weeks so I'm ok to wait.

  • The DVLA will send you all the documentation in the post which you need to get the plates made up. You'll need to take the V5, MOT and Tax Disc of the car you want to put the plate onto to the nearest DVLA office to get everything transferred (or do it by post, which takes longer).

You need to buy him an Audi to put it on.

You don't have to present the actual tax disc, just notify DVLA of the expiry date and the serial numbers from the top arch. DVLA will issue a replacement tax disc with the same expiry date. Always make sure you have a valid tax disc as the offence is 'failure to display' rather than 'failure to purchase'.

    a) Get ready for all the abuse you'll get on here.
    b) Get used to being told how much of a waste of money they are.
    c) Get used to paying lots and lots of fees for eery piece of paper from the DVLA/Your Ins company.
    d) Learn never to bu ya personalised plate again. Ever.

Some personalised plates are fun. There's a painter/decorator near me who has GLO55Y on this van. :D
