Sony PSP Problem

Hello all.

I just bought a Sony PSP from Ebay which is in very good condition but I can't connect to PSN with my Playstation ID. I know that all the credentials are correct. It says that my details are incorrect.

However, I just went into System Software and noticed that it has custom firmware (this wasn't listed on the Ebay listing but the company is a gadget company and not a private seller so they might not have known).

Do you think that the custom firmware has anything to do with me not being able to log into PSN? :o

Also, what does custom firmware allow me to do exactly? I think I read about it allowing games to be downloaded onto a memory stick but that sounds illegal!

Thank you in advance.

Grr. I've logged in now, but it's saying a software update is required. I'm not sure what to do because of the custom firmware. Will it end up bricking my PSP? =/

ETA: Just went to update and it said that the system is already up-to-date but I can't go into the Playstation Store because it says I need to update.=/

It sounds like firmware you have is there to play "homebrew" games, if you update you wont be able to do those kind of things.

The thing is that I can't update via the PSP because it says my system is already up to date!

Someone gave me instructions on downloading the update file from Playstation and putting it on the memory stick though and then it should hopefully restore it back to original Firmware and then I can update properly.

Just need to wait for my memory stick to arrive...

i wouldnt trust anyone on ebay and the psp are rubbish really, my son's broke after 2 years or so.

save up for the new ps vita or whatever its called

but in all honesty sony are rubbish now.

    just my opinion!
  • Same thing happened to me too. I followed the official instructions on how to update from memory stick. There is a section called "Update via Storage Media". Once the update completed, it removed the custom firmware without any issues.

I THINK - and I'm out of touch with the PSP CFW scene a bit now - that there is a way to get your PSP back running CFW, or at least running a version that will connect to the PSN store and stuff... when I used to fiddle with mine (I used it for running emulators for old consoles on mainly) I used to get lots of my info on the qj.net forum - might be worth an ask there - basically I fiddle with mine so rarely (only when a game I've bought requires a firmware update) that I wouldn't trust my own instructions on how to do it!
