Cancelling Barclays PPI

The is not about claiming or complaining as such but it might be the best place to ask this question as there's likely to be people reading who would know the answer.

I phoned Barclays to cancel a PPI policy that was attached to my mortgage which I've just finished paying. I was kept on hold for over half an hour during which time I was transfered 4 times through at least 3 different countries.
Eventually I get told, very unconvincingly by someone who put me on hold for three minutes while she found the address, that the policy has to be cancelled in writing with the cancellation letter sent to a PO BOX number in Ireland.
Does anyone know if this correct? I've cancelled insurance policies before by telephone and can't see any logic in having to write to cancel this one.
Thank you.

Different lending institutions have different procedures. If the Bank have told you to write, then you'll have to write.
    Sorry.

The "Bank told me" that they were putting me through to the correct department 3 times and were wrong. The person I was eventually given this information by stuttered and waffled and seem to have little idea what she was talking about. That's why I was hoping someone might be able to give definite confirmation from personal experience.

Probably better to pop into a local branch of the Bank for positive confirmation.

Or post your query on the Mortgage fee reclaiming board

Could you not just cancel the Direct Debit at your bank?

I'd just cancel the Direct Debit I assume they have been using to take payment for it, and despite you not having felt the need so far, just put in a claim now.
I don't think the OP is wanting to claim, just cancel. Stopping the direct debit would cause a debt to be incurred and subsequently built up if he doesn't cancel the insurance first.

    Better advice here:

  • Thanks peeps. I googled the address they gave me and got this page pertaining to Income Insurance. It's the number that I rang in the first place and it says it can be cancelled by phone or in writing. So what's the difference between that and PPI when it comes to cancelling?

I'm just going to write now I at least know that the address exists.
    God I hate Barclays.:)

Thank you very much you have a lucky face.

I am not full of love for banks and I know how to stick it to them in ways that might make you blanch ;)
Are you truly saying I "love" Banks? I don't think I'd be spending quite so much time here helping others to take £thousands back off them if that were the case.:p
Additionally, I suggested the OP post his original query on the Mortgage forum because he wanted people with personal experience to answer.
