Do you have any indications on the dash that the door is open at the same time?

If so one of the switches for the doors/boot may be faulty, they're fairly simple to replace, if difficult to get to in a lot of cars (it might also be worth poking them a bit, they are sometimes covered in a rubber cone, in the door frame, or near the hinge).
Depending on the car, an additional way to work out which switch is giving the problem, is to turn the main lights on, or leave the keys in the ignition - a lot of cars will give an audio warning if you have the lights on/keys in when you open the drivers door ;) (so if your car has that, but it's not coming on, it's less likely it'll be a fault with the drivers door sensor).

If you are just getting the cabin light on, but not any warning on the dash about doors (assuming your car has one), it's likely to be a fault with the wiring to the cabin light (I'd guess at the switch) or the switch itself.

It shouldn't be a major problem to fix, just one of those ones that is likely to be a bit fiddly/hard to get to.

Most likely to be the switch on the doors you use most often......

But also check the one under the bonnet, It might be connected to the same circuit and these are legendary for causing problems.
