Hi
I've just changed ISP and connecting up my wireless broadband; everythings fine and I'm online but unsure how I connect to the wireless from my phone, the phone asks for a pre-shared key code. Can anyone help me re what I should enter.

On a card that came with my router it had these details:

Wireless Network
Name (SSID): *********************
Key: **********

Router Access
Address: http://etc
User: *****
Password: ***********

I also have a password set up on my ISP account which I used when I connected to the internet.

I'm clueless, please help
Thanks
Ms C x

Just another query re my wireless router; I wonder if anyone can help - a friend came over and tried to connect their iPhone to my router, they could see the router but when they put in the code it came up as incorrect.

I wonder if there is something on my router that I need to alter so it enables other devices to connect to it? It could well be something else, I have no idea, just a thought.

It is possible to set most routers to only allow specific devices to connect, but if this was set on yours the error would be something to the effect of "connection failed"

If your wireless security is WEP, then UPPER and lower case are recognised as the same. If WPA, they are different. (side note: If using WEP you should change to WPA as WEP isn't secure)

As you said it came up as incorrect, and in a previous post you were talking about a PSK, it's probable they typed the network key in incorrectly and typed a capital letter instead of lower case, or a letter instead of a number.

thanks for your post; I'm not sure what WEP, WPA or PSK is, is it easy to change from WEP to WPA and how do I do it?

Log onto the router's admin page (you will need the following info from the card that came with the router)

    Router Access
    Address: http://etc
    User: *****
    Password: ***********

On one of the menus you should find the wireless security settings.

Without changing anything yet make a note of the security mode it's using (and post that here) and a separate note of the security key, paying particular attention to cAsE and Numb3r5 (DO NOT POST THAT INFO HERE)

use this to log into the router's interface, yhen look for the wireless settings and change the security/encryption type to WPA. You MAY need to reset the key (PSK/password) while you're in there

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I'm with Plusnet. I can't find anything about my particular wireless security settings but in the security tips section it states this:

Since September 2008, all Plusnet routers are set up with WPA-PSK encryption and a strong password. This should be enough to prevent intruders gaining access to your network. Our routers also support WPA2-PSK. If your computers and devices are compatible with it, we recommend switching your network to this when you can.

Then you are already using one of the recommended security modes :)

As stated above, the security key for WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK is case sensitive, so your friend with the iphone possibly typed it in wrongly. Easily done.
