Tesco - Emergency Recall Product

I was in Tesco this evening and I picked up a pair of trousers, reduced from £18 to £5.

At the checkout a warning flashed up and the operator called a supervisor. They had a chat for a few minutes and the supervisor told me that they could not sell me the trousers as they were flagged as an "emergency recall product".

It's a pair of trousers for crying out loud. What sort of emergency situation do they envisage?

Some kind of wardrobe malfunction on the high street causing young ladies to swoon, perhaps?

They ought to know the reason for the recall. You could've been at risk just handling them.

It would have been an "Emergency Product Withdrawal."
This is just Tesco terminology for having to remove a product offsale for some reason. It could be anything as simple as a mistake on the packaging to something a lot more serious, for example, about 8 years ago there were bottles of Crusha milk shake mix that were fermenting inside and could explode when handled.

I'd imagine since it was clothing, there was probably just some quality issue reported to head office and they've taken the decision to remove the trousers from sale, could be something as simple as poor stitching, or labelling the size 12s as size 10s or something like that. The first thing that head office do is set the product "not for sale" on the checkout and then send a message to the duty manager to remove the items from sale. Sometimes there is a small delay between this happening, which gave you ten opportunity to pick them up.

Trousers are dangerous things! Every year they cause thousands of injuries.

Try Googling for trouser injury statictics. Depending on which source you read, it's between about 3500 and 6000 people a year in the UK.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Maybe the crotches were sewn too high? That kind of thing can strangulate a hernia :o.

You know, I've been feeling a bit queasy all day. Perhaps I should ring my solicitor?

It was indeed an EPW! It's a shame because they were a decent pair.
