Ok,I know I'm probably completely out of touch but seems like ages since I had any installable updates from Microsoft for XP (my PC's OS)

My PC is set to downloads automatically etc..

Has support now stopped for this OS?

Just curious.................

Support for XP SP3 (or SP2 if you're using the 64-bit vesion) finishes sometime (April?) in 2014.

More info (as you'd expect) can be found on the MS Windows website.

Fwor is correct, however if you haven't had any updates recently it is possible of some corruption?

Try doing a manual update from here http://www.update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

Should provide you with info on whats available, or if you have an error.

Another way of getting updates is to use Internet Explorer and click on Safety and then select Windows Updates from the drop-down menu. From then on it should be clear!

    I am still getting updates.
That said I choose not to do them automatically. I like to pick what and when I install so do it manually via the control panel. Plus should an update screw up my computer, it's easier to track down.
