Council Tax and Part Relocation

Hi, I'm moving to MK with a friend and renting a property. My friend may be travelling home each weekend and was wondering what would happen about Council Tax.
I heard that if her current home is classed as her main home then I can get a 25% reduction on my Council Tax in MK (it will be my main home).
Anybody know anything different?

But it isnt her main home, her main home will be in MK. If she lived in MK and just visits current
home at weekends then thats exactly what it is, visiting, not residing.
If there are two of you living in a house then you cant get single persons discount.
It's you who could get into trouble if you claimed it.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -

It depends on why your moving - it is possible but it depends on the circumstances.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0 -
Hi
I also work in Council Tax recovery but agree with first post. MK would be classed as main residence so would be unable to claim single person discount. When you state she returns home at weekends is this her parents address or another property she owns? If she owns is and is registered for council tax with that authority she should speak to both Local Authorities involved as some give exemptions for 2nd properties if proof that is paying council tax elsewhere is given.
Hope this helps.0 -

I would disagree as it depends on the circumstances - nothing in legislation prevents a person taking a home in another area and not moving their personal situation to the extent that the new property becomes their main residence.
It would be unusual and it would need to be scrutinised but it can happen e.g if the friend is only resident in MK for work purposes.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. I will get her to contact both local authorities. We are moving to MK to live due to work. It will be my main home but she currently has a home and a mortgage and is paying council tax.
We are not trying to cheat the system, we just want to make sure that if we are entitled to a reduction we get it.0 -
If she already has a home elsewhere then she is only a guest with you during the week. Will she be on the lease in your MK place?Be Alert..........Britain needs lerts.0
