Help what to do, got job offer employer wants me to work month in hand.

Hi folks

I have been unemployed and signing on since the end of december last year (24/12/2011) and am on the flexable new deal scheme.

I went for an interview at the end of last week 20/04/12 and was told i have the job pending reference checks, the employer called me today at 6.15pm to say that everything is fine and they want me to start tomorrow.

the problem is that at the very end of the phone call he said that i will have to work a month in hand so will have to work two months before i get any pay, unfortunitly i have no money in the bank, and as far as im aware my flexable new deal provider will only be able to give me help for a week of two of money, the working a month in hand was never discussed with me at the interview, and he hasn't left me any time to speak to mmy flexable new deal advisor before starting tomorrow.

i dont know what to do as the little money i have left will run out way before the first month ends and i have no one to borrow from and no access to credit cards/overdraft.

bit long winded but this it really stressing me out.:(

Are you sure he wants you to work two months before getting paid?

Or does he mean work May and get paid, like everyone else, at the end of May - which is still working a month in hand iyswim?

So tell the employer and see if you can get an advance on your wages. Many employers will understand that you may have no money.

I think this is quite unreasonable.
I'm sure employers know that one of the main reasons people work is to get paid every month.
Because you've been signing on for more than a 6 months I think you are entitled to a "back to work" grant which is £100. You should get it within a week of signing off.
I also think the job centre offer loans if needed. You could probably go in and ask or go and visit your Citizens Advice office.
  • no he was quite clear that it would be work this month and it would be the end of next mont before i would recieve a wage, i questioned if he was sure of this as thats a very long time to expect someone to go without pay

if you read what you saying its not that long at all.

so he say's work this months, its near the end of the month,
    and
then work all next month and recive you wages at the end of the month.
likely because u may have just missed the pay day for this month.

you will work for 5 weeks without money

as said above JSA will help with with £100 back to work funds, and also there are other offers there with DWP like loans, an so on

also as above again u can ask for a advance, i prefer not to do this but what about friends or family, just write down with in reason what you need to get by for the next 5 weeks and try and ask a family member can u borrow,

I think he worded it badly
Often companies close off their payroll a week or two before the end of the month to ensure it's all done ahead of time. If your payday is the last day of the month then you'd start tomorrow -after the cut off date for this month.
I would double check tomorrow the exact date you'll be paid and confirm it is 30 May

i suppose its similar to ours. we get paid on set day (say the 15th) so anyone starting on the 1st for example won't get paid for 6 weeks until the 15th of the following month and you get paid what you have earnt up until the end of the month. The good thing is that you get paid one month after you leave
    :T:T :beer: :beer::beer::beer: to the lil one :) :beer::beer::beer:
  • when i questioned him he was adiment that i will not get paid the month of may and i would get paid month of june, and at teh end of my employment i would get another months pay.

I would love to think thet either he got his wires crossed when he was told how it was or he explained it to me poorly as i do want the job.

I will have to go tomorrow and find out for sure, i will also try and speak to my fnd provider in the morning.

What needs clarifying is the pay period and the date that is paid.

Check the employer out carefully do they have a history of staff turnover.
