General Tax Credit Question (that I can't find answer to)

Hi,
I'm filling in a tax credit form - last year our joint income was significantly more than this coming year. As the form is based on last years earnings, do I have to send in the form and wait for it to be refused before updating them? Or can I just attach some extra notes to let them know (complicated again by maternity pay)?
Thanks in advance for any help

Fill it in with previous year income, wait for your award (possibly Nil award) then ring them and get it changed to current year estimate.
Remember though there is a new disregard, so the first £2500 fall in income between previous and current will be ignored.
