Medical discharge Help

My mate is due to get medically discharged based on an attrributable med condition picked up during service. He is an OR9 with 28 years service, currently on scheme 75. What is he likely to walk away with? Is it tax free both the lump sum and monthly. He can work out his normal pension via the calculator but nothing in it about med discharge. Thanks.

Your mate should be laughing all the way to the bank....
But really a lot depends on when the attributable injury occurred. If it was prior to April 2005, he will be dealt with under the War Pension Scheme, if after 2005 it will be the AFCS (but the claim should have been made within 5 (I Think) years of injury.
Dealing with the WAR PENSION SIDE, he will be assessed and given a % Award, based against a fully fit individual the same age as him. As long as the % is over 20% (And if he's being MD's for it I'd hope it was) he will get a Weekly War pension, as well as his AFPS75 pension.
As the injury is attributable, his War Pension will be Tax Free, I'm not sure about the AFPS pension though, Mine is Tax free, but I was MD'd after 10 years service, so I get an Disability Pension under APFS75, but as he's already eligible for a full pension, not sure how this works. MIGHT BE VERY LUCKY and get his main pension Tax free too.
AFCS is similar, but will be under those rules and will be a GMP instead of the War Pension. He would get a lower payment on this though as his age will go against him, where as on the War pension scheme he will benefit because of the bigger Service Pension.
Hope this helps and makes senseOpinions are like bottoms - We all have one, just some stink more than others

It happened after 2005. He has had a lump sum from AFPS last year, not alot. The condition has worsened resulting in the Med discharge. How will this effect it. Thank you.0

Once a pension is awarded they will reduce his monthly payment until the original one off award made under the AFCS is repaid.
You cannot be compensated for the same injury twice.
I know, it sucks, but that is the system.0 -
Hello ldonald101,
This page provides all the information your friend will require. If they are in any doubt about their entitlement the advice is to apply; please note that the process can take some time.

I become slightly suspicious, when questions like this are asked, for the following reasons, As an OR9 with 28 years of service should know who and what questions to ask regarding a possible pay out,
I just find it hard to grasp why someone is asking that sort of question on here as to how much he is likely to get,
considering it there are many variables, what condition/disability being the main one.
maybe it's just me being cynical but what goes through my head is an ex wife trying to see how much see can get.
That statement is not meant to offend, I just wouldn't ask that sort of thing myself, with out going through the appropriate professional resources.0
