Hi guys
Following on from a thread I started a few months back https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3555767 I think I have finally found an economic and solid way of sending the plants.
Now I am not too concerned about them getting squashed as i think I have found a way of stopping that.
What I am trying to do is make it as light as possible, as some of the tom plants I have are nearly 7-8 inches high and there is no way I could make the cost of sending the soil and pot required for that economical.
What I was going to do was take them out of the pot, remove as much soil from the root as I dare and then wrap the root area in kitchen towel. Give it a good soak and seal it in a freezer type polyhthene bag. Hopefully this way they should keep the 2-3 days in the post.
Does this sound mad?
Let me know your opinions before I make a real foul up.

Why dont you do exactly as you described and post them to yourself and see what state they turn up in? Then re-pot them and see if they grow ok.0

I buy lots of plants from ebay when I have brought large tom the roots are wrapped in wet kitchen paper then cling film. The toms are then wrapped in bubble wrap then sellotaped down to the box.I would like to be a glow-worm.
A glow-worm's never glum.
Its hard to be downhearted when the sun shines out your bum.0 -
Sounds ok to me. Where are you sending them? Stating the obvious, but post on a Monday so they're not stuck over the weekend. I'm sure they'll be fine.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
An empty Pringle Pot is a good sturdy container, and not too heavy.0

I've had tomato plants sent in a fizzy drinks bottle. Cut around the side about 2inch from the base. As others have said damp kitchen roll or newpaper around plant rootbase and little soil. Place inside the base and top of plastic bottle slide over and taped up.
Other time I had plants sent in proper, plastic plant packets if I was buying 3 plants.0
