Council tax and Moving/Signing on Help

Hi there,

I'm moving out of private rented accomodation next week. My landlord has been very fair at letting me move out quickly as my job is finished so as a courtesy I want to pay him another months council tax.

I will be signing on in a different area until I get work and living with parents so am I allowed to pay for CT in one part of the country and sign on in another or should I tell the council Im moving out and just hand him the cash for it?

Just want to do the right thing.

Thanks

More explanation needed. You aren't working so have no requirement to pay council tax if you apply for council tax benefit even if only for a short period of time. You can have council tax benefit on two homes at once as you are between tenancies/properties.

I don't need CT benefit and I know I dont need to pay, I just want to do it for my landlord. I'll be living with my folks so wont be paying there but will be looking for work/signing there. Thanks

If you really like chucking money around then make it simple, just give him/her an envelope with £50 cash as a thank you.

  • Hi

Council Tax don't mind who pays the money as long as it's paid. You can't however be responsible for 2 council taxes at the same time. If you have left one property but still responsible for the tenancy agreement until following month & are paying council tax on another property, you will be able to apply for an exemption on the first one (which is either 100% exemption if there is no furniture in the property or 50% if still has furniture).
